All courses meet the English graduation requirement for Mt. Pleasant  High School. Many courses meet the UC/CSU requirement. UC/CSU require that students complete courses within the same academic year and within the same level.

A grade of D- will meet East Side Union High School District graduation requirements, but a grade of C- or higher is required to fulfill UC/CSU/private universities entrance requirements.

Grade 9 -12 (UC, CSU)
ENGLISH 1 (year) Level: 9, 10, 11, 12. English 1 is a standards-based college preparatory course.
Students read and analyze historically and culturally significant works of literature. Students also develop
skills in reading and understanding informational texts. This course satisfies 1 year of the East Side Union
High School District's English requirement.
 

E1001X9  P-ENGLISH 1A  (ACCELERATED)

Grade 9 only (UC, CSU)
ENGLISH 1 A (year) Level: 9. English 1A is an accelerated standards-based college preparatory course.
Students read and analyze historically and culturally significant works of literature. Students also develop
skills in reading and understanding informational texts. Students demonstrate their ability to work
independently and be self-motivated. Student product grading is more rigorous than English 1. This course
satisfies 1 year of the East Side Union High School District's English requirement.

Grades 10-12 (UC, CSU)
ENGLISH 2 (year) Level: 10, 11, 12. English 2 is a standards-based college preparatory course. Students
read and analyze works of literature representative of writing from around the world, exploring a broad
range of literary elements to enhance understanding. Students also develop skills in reading and analyzing
informational texts. This course satisfies 1 year of the East Side Union High School District's English
requirement.

ENGLISH 3 (year) Level: 11, 12. English 3 is a standard-based college preparatory course open to 11th
and 12th grade students who have demonstrated mastery of English 2 curriculum standards. Students read
and critically analyze major works that trace the significant social, cultural, and philosophical trends that
influenced American literature. This course satisfies 1 year of the East Side Union High School District's
English requirement.

Grade 11-12 (UC, CSU)
ENGLISH Language and Composition AP (year) Level: 11, 12. AP English Language and Composition
deepens and expands students’ understanding of how written language functions rhetorically. The course
cultivates the rhetorical understanding and use of written language by directing students’ attention to
writer/reader interactions in their reading and writing of various formal and informal genres (e.g., memos,
letters, advertisements, political satires, personal narratives, scientific arguments, cultural critiques,
research reports). This course satisfies 1 year of the East Side Union High School District's English
requirement. AP IS a CSU Approved Senior Year-Long Course for a "Conditionally Ready" Student.
 

E3600XX. P-GENRES OF COMP

Grade Level: 11-12 UC/CSU 
Description: This is a two-semester English credit course that offers additional preparation in
composition and response techniques, exploring a broad range of rhetorical modes (narrative,
argumentation, informational expository, analytical expository, business communication, technical
writing) with an emphasis on understanding nonfiction text. Students perform multiple pieces of writing,
aligned with the Common Core Content Standards for English / Language Arts Standards. This class is for
juniors with 15 or fewer ELA graduation credits concurrently enrolled in English 1 or English 2 and seniors
with 25 or fewer graduation credits enrolled in English 1, or English 2, or English 3. This course cannot be
repeated.

Grade 11-12 (UC, CSU)
AP English Literature and Composition (year) Level 11,12. AP English Literature and Composition
engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close
reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide
both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style and
themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism and
tone. This course satisfies 1 year of the East Side Union High School District's English requirement. AP
IS a CSU Approved Senior Year-Long Course for a "Conditionally Ready" Student.

Grade 12 only (UC, CSU)
ERWC (year) Level: 12. The Expository Reading and Writing Course is a standards-based college
preparatory course. This rhetoric-based course emphasizes the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and
argumentative reading and writing. This course satisfies 1 year of the East Side Union High School
District's English requirement. ERWC IS a CSU Approved Senior Year-Long Course for a
"Conditionally Ready" Student.
 

P-E5650XX. P-CREATIVE WRITING (A-G Category: G)

Grade Level: 11-12 UC/CSU
This course is an elective course, and does not satisfy the ESUHSD English graduation requirement.
Description: Advanced Creative Writing includes the writing of non-fiction texts, the creation of original
stories, children's books, and poems. The course expands students' ability to discuss literature, analyze
characters, and write effectively and skillfully. Students apply their understanding of writing techniques
to unique creations limited only by their own creativity. Students write daily to refine their skills and
understand nuances of plot, characterization, and rhetoric. By the end of the course, students may
additionally use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish their writing.
