Fine Arts Courses  UC/CSU  (A-G Categories: F)

All courses meet the Fine Arts graduation requirement for Mt. Pleasant  High School. Many
courses meet the UC/CSU requirement. UC/CSU require that students complete courses within
the same academic year and within the same course.
 
Note: Courses noted with a “P” in front of their title indicate qualification for A-G eligibility. A
grade of D- will meet district graduation requirements, but a grade of C- or higher is required to
fulfill UC/CSU/private universities entrance requirements.
 
T1100XX.  P-Advanced Band 1
Grade Level: 9   
Prerequisites: At least one-year prior experience on a Band instrument
Description:  In the Advanced Band 1 courses, students will study a wide variety of musical styles with an emphasis on developing technical proficiency on their instrument. Advanced Band 1 courses are designed to develop skills and techniques necessary for Advanced Band 2-4 courses. Required activities include concerts and festivals outside of school time.
 
T1150XX. P-Advanced Band 2-4
Grade Level: 10-12 
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Advanced Band 1 or teacher recommendation.
Description: The performance-based Advanced Band 2 through Advanced Band 4 courses are the most advanced instrumental music organizations in the school. Required band activities include concerts, festivals, spirit band, rallies, solos, athletic events, and ensembles. Required band activities include concerts and festivals outside of school time. Conservatory Ensemble and Symphonic Band (Advanced Band 2–4) Prerequisites: Successful completion of an instrumental class. These classes are grade-level based for intermediate students who have experience in band. Wind Ensemble (Advanced Band 2–4) Prerequisites: Audition or teacher recommendation only All students must be auditioned to be enrolled in this class. This course is for advanced students.
 
T2000XX.  P-Choir 1
Grade Level: 9-12  
Prerequisites: None
Description: The Choir 1 courses are introductory courses designed to develop skills and techniques necessary for advancement to Choir 2. Students will learn to read music, understand both melody and harmony, music theory, proper voice technique and breathing, and usage of the voice in different vocal ranges. Required activities include concerts and festivals outside of school time.
 
T2050XX. P-Choir 2-4
Grade Level: 10-12  
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Choir 1 (recommended completion with a C- or higher) and/or audition or teacher recommendation.  
Description: Choir 2-4 courses afford students the opportunity to study a wide variety of musical styles, as well as the more advanced elements and techniques of singing, as well as more advanced music theory. Required activities include concerts, festivals, solos, and ensembles.
 
T1300XX.  P-Guitar 1
Grade Level: 9-12 
Prerequisites: None
Description: Guitar 1 is an introductory course that teaches students the basics of playing the guitar. Students learn strumming, fingerstyle, open- and closed-chord shapes, melody playing, and other fundamental techniques. Daily practice outside of class is required. This is a performance class. Some outside activities are required.
 
T1350XX. P-Guitar 2-4
Grade Level: 10-12  
Prerequisites: Pass Guitar 1 course or by instructor approval
Description: Guitar 2 - 4 is an intermediate course for students with at least a year of guitar experience or significant experience on another instrument. Students learn movable sales and chord shapes, traditional fingerstyle and strum patterns, and other intermediate techniques. Daily practice outside of class is required. This is a performance class. Some outside activities will be required.
 
T2400XX. P-Music Appreciation
Grade Level: 11-12  
Prerequisites: None
Description: This is a non-performance-based course. This class will explore the elements of music as they are used in a variety of musical styles - historical and contemporary. Students will develop an understanding of the nature and structure of music as well as its expressive qualities. Students will learn to value, understand and appreciate all types of music.
 
T1500XX.  P-PIANO 1
Grade Level: 9-12
Prerequisites: None
Piano 1 offers beginning instruction in proper keyboard technique, chords, and note reading. The course includes music theory and fundamentals.
 
T1550XX.  P-PIANO 2-4   
Grade Level: 10-12. 
Prerequisites: None
A one year course designed to be the continuation of the material covered in Piano 1. It is also designed to be a brush-up course for those students who have not quite mastered the basics of piano. A one year course designed for those students who are committed to further developing their skills and increasing their musical knowledge.
