ANIMATION MAGNET PROGRAM

Animation Magnet The Animation Studio is a four year Magnet Program teaching the fundamentals of traditional animation including some basic computer animation. Students may enter the program as a magnet transfer from another high school as a freshman or sophomore. Students may also enter in their junior year only if Mt.Pleasantis their home school (based upon class size and artistic capabilities). Students should have above average drawing skills or the willingness to improve the skills they possess. Emphasis is placed upon drawing for animation, the elements of design, problem solving, planning and organizational skills.

 CalStateUniversity/ UC Track* - Incoming Freshman with counselors approval may be placedin higher math / science classes. * Class to be taken simultaneously with Animation class. NOTE: Students may be required to take a seven period school day to fulfill some core requirements or attend Summer school. The “Animation Studio” hopes that all students attend a post secondary educational institution. The above “track” allows Animation students to be on target for Cal State University or UC Campus admission provided that the students maintains an appropriate GPA and scores well on college entrance exams. • Second year or PE may be taken in either 10th, 11th, 12th grade.

Animation 1(9th and 10th graders) Y2010XX

Animation 1 is the introductory course in a four-year sequence of animation study. This one-year course focuses on the basic elements and principles of art and animation. The students will develop drawings skills through sketching still lives, objects, figures and animals. Basic animation assignments will include character development, simple movement studies, traditional animation processes, beginning computer graphics applications, and the history of art and animation.

Prerequisite: A genuine interest in the art of drawing and animation with the understanding that this class demands personal responsibility in planning creativity and meeting deadlines. Students applying for the Animation Magnet are required to submit the Magnet Application Form and two drawings that reflect their drawings that reflect their drawing competency with this application. 

Animation 2(10th to 12th graders) Y2020XX

Animation 2 is the second class in the “Animation Studio” series. The class is for those students who have passed Animation 1 with a grade of “C” or better and have received approval from the animation instructor to enroll in this class. The class continues the process of preparing the student for a career in animation through traditional and digital animation exercises. Students are expected to be responsible, self-motivated, and committed to this program by meeting all academic and artistic requirements of the class.

Prerequisites: Open to any Sophomore, Junior, or Senior who has completed “Animation 1 or 2” with a grade of “C” or better and instructor’s written consent.

• Supplementary required course: Drawing and Painting 1 must be taken concurrently with Animation 2. Students will learn character development in 3-dimensions, painting techniques and realistic drawing techniques as they apply to animation backgrounds and interiors as well as how they apply to 3-D claymation.      

Animation 3(11th and 12th graders)Y2030XX

Animation 3 is the third class in the “Animation Studio” series. The class is for those students who have passes Animation 1 and Animation 2 with a grade of “C” or better and have received approval from the animation instructor to enroll in this class. The class continues the progress of preparing the student for a career in animation through traditional and digital animation exercises. The goal of this class is to focus the student’s energy and creativity on developing a quality portfolio upon graduation in his or her senior year. Students are required to responsible, self-motivated, and committed to this program by meeting all academic and artistic requirements of the class.

Prerequisites: Open to any Junior or Senior who has completed “Animation 1 and 2” with a grade of “C” or better and instructor’s written consent.

• Supplementary required course: Photo 1 must be taken concurrently with Animation 3. Students will learn basic techniques in 35mm camera use, film processing and printing, indoor studio portrait lighting and composition. “Special” advance instruction will be given second semester in video production and Adobe Photo Shop.

Animation 4(12th graders) Y2040XX

Animation 4 is the fourth class in the “Animation Studio” series. The class is for those students who have passed Animation 1, Animation 2, and Animation 3 with a grade of “C” or better and have received approval from the animation instructor to enroll in this class. The class continues the process of preparing the student for a career in animation through traditional and digital animation exercises. The goal of this class is to focus the student’s energy and creativity on developing a quality portfolio upon graduation in his or her senior year. Students are required to be responsible, self-motivated, and committed to this program by meeting all academic and artistic requirements of the class.

Prerequisites: Open to any senior who has completed “Animation 1, 2, and 3” with a “C” or better and instructor’s written consent.
